Major Units

  • New Offshore Patrol Vessels - once introduced into service [HMNZ Ships Otago (August 2007) and Wellington (December 2007)].
  • New Inshore Patrol Vessels – once introduced into service [HMNZ Ships Rotoiti (April 2007), Hawea (July 2007), Pukaki (September 2007) and Taupo (December 2007)].

The provision of Offshore and Inshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs and IPVs) capable of conducting maritime operations in support of MAO&T and for the security and protection of New Zealand’s economic border and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).  Until the delivery of the new OPVs and IPVs the existing IPCs will undertake these roles to the limit of their capability.  The OPVs will also be prepared to conduct sovereignty and resource protection patrol operations in the Southern Ocean, Ross Dependency, South Pacific region, and further afield when directed.
