Joint Operational Patrols

The Navy and Govt Agencies (Customs, Fisheries, Police and Conservation) regularly work together on operational patrols to monitor and maintain the integrity of New Zealand’s maritime borders. The combined patrols have been highly successful in recent years, preventing potential Customs offences and identifying offences that have resulted in convictions.

Patrols are conducted in various coastal regions including the Cook Strait and Marlborough Sounds.  These areas have an increase in yacht activity at this time of year. Customs officers and Naval boarding parties will board vessels during the patrol.  During a boarding, a vessel’s papers are checked to ensure they comply with New Zealand Customs legislation.

Customs ensures people, goods and craft move safely and efficiently in and out of New Zealand and operations like these keep New Zealand safe and manage risks to the borders.

The Navy’s contribution to multi-agency operations such as this around the New Zealand coastline will rise with the delivery of four new Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPVs) under Project Protector. Customs will deploy attachments as required for Customs patrols. Patrols of this nature are a critical element to the introduction of the new IPVs as they test and prepare the combined crews ability to operate jointly and achieve the desired results.
