Brigadier James Bliss

Brigadier James (Jim) Bliss was born on 1 March 1972 in Blenheim, New Zealand. He enlisted in the New Zealand Army in 1990 and graduated the Officer Cadet School (NZ) in 1991 as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal New Zealand Corps of Transport.

Brigadier Bliss has held command and staff appointments in the Ready Reaction Force, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Combat Service Support Battalions, 2nd/1st Infantry Battalion, and HQ 2nd Land Force Group. Brigadier Bliss has been posted as an Instructor to the Officer Cadet School (NZ) and the Tactical School. Brigadier Bliss commanded the 3rd Combat Service Support Battalion from 2009-2012, and other appointments include Chief of Staff, 3rd Land Force Group, Director Strategy Execution, Army General Staff, and Logistics Commander (Land). From August 2014 to June 2016, Brigadier Bliss commanded the NZ Army Training and Doctrine Command.   

Brigadier Bliss has a Bachelor of Administrative Leadership, a Masters of Military Arts and Science, and a Masters of Strategic Studies. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College.

Brigadier Bliss commanded the NZDF Terminal Operations Detachment at McMurdo Station, Antarctica for the 1997/1998 season and has completed four operational deployments. He deployed in 1999/2000 as a Plans Officer at Headquarters International Force East Timor and then to Afghanistan three times; in 2003 as a Liaison Officer; in 2008/2009 as the Officer Commanding the NZ National Support Element; and in 2012/2013 as Deputy J5 Plans with HQ ISAF Strategic Transition and Assessment Group.

In 2017, Brigadier Bliss was posted to Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand, first as J3 (Chief of Operations), and then as J5 (Chief of Plans). In October 2018 he was promoted to Brigadier and posted to his current appointment as the Land Component Commander.

Brigadier Bliss and his wife Pip have four children, Samuel, Oliver, Alexander and Annabelle. His interests include skiing, hunting, and outdoor activities with his kids
